As ane experienced wedding planner in Alberta, I've seen trends come and go over the years. But this one will always be a favourite and it's really gaining momentum in 2025, where almost HALF our weddings this year have asked a close friend or family member to officiate their wedding ceremony.
And as an officiant, whether you’re a natural public speaker or terrified of the mic, officiating a wedding as a friend or family member is a huge honour and a big responsibility. To help your freshly-minted officiant prepare for the big day, here are few key tips to help them feel just a little more confident ... and have fun in the process!
The Basics
Know the legalities for the couple’s province or state. File the right paperwork to be properly ordained, and don’t forget to sign & file the marriage license.
Connect with the couple to understand their expectations and collaborate on their vision for the ceremony, whether that involves special rituals or traditions, the vibe they want, readings, sensitive topics, special mentions, personal vows & more!
Write the ceremony, keep it short and sweet, and ensure you include all key elements.
Make it about the couple with heartfelt anecdotes and personal references.
Practice, practice, practice. Time yourself, work on pacing and get comfortable with pauses for emotion & laughter.
The Art of Officiating
Bring a folder / book and don’t read off an iPhone or iPad.
Dress appropriately for the location & type of wedding.
Save the champagne for AFTER the ceremony.
Speak to the couple, not just the crowd.
Embrace the emotions of the ceremony (yours too!).
Don’t be afraid to use tasteful and appropriate humour!
Stand straight, shoulders back, chin up & smile.
And Don’t Forget To ...
Confirm how the couple would like to be introduced.
Ask about any pre- or post-ceremony announcements.
Ask the audience to sit down after the bride arrives.
Encourage the couple to stay connected & hold hands during the ceremony.
Step aside during the kiss so you’re not peeking out in photos.
Have an extra copy of the ceremony with you ... and the couple’s vows!
Most of all, HAVE FUN!
Being asked to officiate a wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to contribute something truly meaningful to your loved ones’ big day. With a little preparation, you can create a ceremony that’s as unforgettable and heartfelt as their love!
